The lower and safer your withdrawal rate, the bigger the pot you need.

Yearly income you want in retirement (£) After-tax spending, in today's money. The average UK couple wanting a "moderate" lifestyle needs roughly £43,000 a year, per the PLSA; a single person about £31,000.

Safe withdrawal rate The share of your pot you draw in year one, then increase with inflation. 4% is the common starting point; 3% to 3.5% is more cautious for a long or early retirement.

Include the State Pension in my income

This is a planning rule of thumb, not a guarantee. Safe withdrawal research is based on historic market returns and does not promise your money will last; sequence of returns, fees and how flexibly you spend all matter. Treat the number as a target to aim at and review it as you go.
